“I managed to fit in a mid week 2 night stay at Hartford House in the KZN Midlands during my latest visit to South Africa. The main reason for my visit was the food, but I was actually more impressed with the beautiful setting of Hartford House and the exemplary service.”

I was firstly given a beautiful room on the side of the lake, it had a wonderful view and was beautifully appointed, especially the copper bath. However, there was no WiFi there, which I really needed. At dinner, they offered to move me to the main house, where I could get a good WiFi signal. They moved all my luggage over dinner. Incredible service! I will write a separate review of the dinner. Breakfast was amazing, a huge buffet with wonderful fruit and local yoghurts and cheeses. Different freshly baked breads and pastries. Two different freshly squeezed juices to choose from and then a hot option. I can definitely say that it was the best eggs benedict that I have ever eaten.
On the second night, I was the only guest but the service didn’t slip. I wasn’t feeling too well, so the kitchen phoned my room and offered to basically cook me what I wanted and deliver it to the room. The rooms themselves are very large, with a separate lounge area, a dressing room, a bathroom and a separate shower room. There was also a door leading out to a patio area and the garden. But it was the bathroom that I loved with it’s huge marble bath, so relaxing with the candles that they provide.
The gardens are gorgeous at Hartford House and when the sun came out on the second day, I spent a good hour walking around, taking photos and watching the very varied bird life.
Hartford House is very easy to reach, 10 minutes from the N3 exit and very well placed for exploring the Midlands. I always find the service and hospitality very good in South Africa but Hartford House excelled themselves. I can’t wait to return.
