“We spent a wonderful 3 night weekend here at Hartford House, in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. We had reserved one of the suites overlooking the lake; this was very large, spacious suite, with plenty of adjoining rooms, floor to ceiling windows with louvre blinds for privacy.”

All the suites at Hartford House have a fridge and microwave oven, and the chef provided us with a complimentary bowl of freshly cut up fruit (on request). There is also a large fireplace, which we appreciated as it was a particularly cold weekend. The bedroom (and bed) was enormous and the bathroom was also a very large area with separate basins and a huge window overlooking the farm vista.
The breakfast menu (in the main homestead) was fairly limited but definitely adequate in catering for most culinary preferences.
High Tea in Tijnhuis, in a relaxing environment surrounded by ponds, was delicious. The selection of teas, snacks and food was also fairly limited, but an indication that items are freshly prepared, based on availability of ingredients.
This meal stood out as an indication of the exceptional talent of the resident chef. We had been asked upon check-in for dietary requirements, which were then taken into account when the menu was formulated. This was an unforgettable culinary experience – sublime.
We took a long walk around the farm, visited the beautiful horses (400+) in the different paddocks, stable and fields. Our gracious host, Duncan Bruce, explained the running of the Summerhill Stud Farm and gave us some of the history of Hartford House. He also made recommendations of where to go on the Midlands Meander, which we embarked upon on one of the days.
